Your Fall Hair Color Guide from Downtown Louisville's Bourbon-Inspired Salon

Fall Is Calling, and So Is Your Next Great Color

There's a moment every fall in Louisville when the air turns crisp, the trees along the river start to glow amber and gold, and the whole city seems to settle into something a little richer. It's the season of barrel tastings, bonfires, and Bourbon Trail weekends. Shouldn't your hair get the same upgrade?

Summer color tends to fade under sun, chlorine, and humidity. By the end of September, those bright highlights can look brassy or washed out. Fall is the perfect time to hit refresh with warmer, deeper, more dimensional shades that look beautiful against cozy sweaters and golden-hour light.

At Bourbon & Blush Salon & Spa, we're located in the heart of downtown Louisville, and we believe your color should feel like a truly Kentucky kind of experience: rich, warm, and aged to perfection. Here's how to find your perfect fall shade:

This Season's Bourbon-Inspired Color Palette

The best fall hair shades are like the best bourbons: layered, warm, and full of depth. Here are the looks our guests are asking for this season:

Barrel-Aged Beauty

Barrel-Aged Brunette: A deep, glossy chocolate brown with subtle caramel ribbons woven through. It's rich without being flat, and it's the easiest way to go darker for fall while keeping dimension.

Copper Still: Warm copper and cinnamon tones that catch the light like a polished copper still. This is the statement shade of the season and looks stunning on fair to medium skin with warm undertones.

Honey Oak Blonde: Not ready to give up your blonde? Warm it up. Golden honey and toasted-oak tones soften icy summer blonde into something cozier, with far less brassiness.

Maple Balayage: Hand-painted maple and amber pieces over a natural base give you a soft, sun-kissed grow-out. It's perfect if you want low-maintenance color that still feels new.

Black Cherry Neat

Black Cherry Neat: A dark brunette or soft black base with a whisper of burgundy or plum. Subtle in daylight, gorgeous by candlelight, and a favorite for fall weddings and holiday events.

Smoked Rye: For our cool-toned guests, this is a rich mushroom brown or smoky ash blend that feels seasonal without going warm. It's modern, polished, and very forgiving as it grows out.

How to Find Your Perfect Fall Hair Shade

The right color isn't about chasing a trend. It's about what makes you glow. Here are three things to think about before your appointment.

1. Know your undertone. Look at the veins on your wrist in natural light. Greenish veins usually mean warm undertones, which shine in copper, honey, and caramel. Bluish or purple veins point to cool undertones, which look best in ash, mushroom, and deep burgundy. A mix of both? You're neutral and can wear almost anything.

2. Be honest about maintenance. If you love a fresh look but can't come in every six weeks, ask about balayage or a soft root melt. They grow out gracefully. Bold reds and bright blondes look incredible but need more frequent glossing to stay vibrant.

3. Think about your fall calendar. Have a wedding, a big event, or holiday photos coming up? Book your color two to three weeks ahead so it has time to settle and you can come back for any fine-tuning.

Still not sure? That's exactly what a consultation is for.

Keep Your Fall Color Rich All Season

Like a good bourbon, great color deserves a little care. A few simple habits keep it looking fresh from the first frost to the holidays.

  • Wait 48 to 72 hours before your first shampoo so the color can fully set.

  • Switch to a sulfate-free, color-safe shampoo and conditioner. Ask your stylist which products fit your hair type.

  • Turn down the water temperature. Hot water opens the hair cuticle and lets color fade faster.

  • Use heat protectant every time you blow-dry, curl, or straighten.

  • Book a gloss between color appointments. It revives shine and tone, especially for reds and warm blondes.

  • Don't forget moisture. Indoor heat and cooler air can dry hair out, so a weekly deep-conditioning treatment goes a long way.
